Core ESL Program Texts For Period 1: Language Structure
"In order to learn the formal rules of a language, students need to practice new structures in a variety of contexts to help them internalize and master them. To this end, Focus on Grammar provides an abundance of both controlled and communicative exercises so that students can bridge the gap between knowing grammatical structures and using them. The many communicative activities in each unit enable students to personalize what they have learned in order to talk to each other with ease about hundreds of everyday issues.

TOEFL

The primary text used in the TOEFL program is Longman's Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test.

"By far, the Longman Prep. Course for the TOEFL has proven time and again to be effective. Many test-prep publications are written in a manner that interferes with a learner's self-study ambitions. Explanations of exercises, grammar points, and skills are often more difficult for the learner to comprehend than the content of the test itself. Longman's Prep Course manages to circumvent this problem by identifying the fact that students with various levels of ability will be accessing their texts, and has made the instructions and explanations as clear and intelligible as possible. Author Deborah Phillips has identified (correctly, I believe) a limited number of skills which students can focus on first to stabilize, then to increase, their TOEFL scores."

Supplementary Material: In addition to the primary text a number of other supplementary texts and audio cd's and software programs, including a free TestDen online test will be used. We spare nothing to ensure your success.

TOEIC
The Official TOEIC Test Preparation Guide is the most important book to have for your TOEIC test preparation journey. This guide, prepared by ETS, is the only one that can give you practice with "real" TOEIC material. Test-preparation guides prepared by other companies try to approximate ETS' style, but they can never match the exact difficulty level of an actual ETS test. In addition, for (amount), TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide includes an ample number of practice exercises: There are two mini-tests, two complete tests, and practice questions for each of the seven sections. The authors include explanations for all of the answers too, which is always helpful. Working through all of this material should give you a decent understanding of and preparation for the TOEIC test.

Business English

With this book all four language skills are developed, with a focus on communicative practice. Each unit begins by introducing students to the core vocabulary relating to the theme of the unit. This is then reinforced through listening and reading texts drawn from authentic sources, information gap and discussion activities, role-plays, mini case studies and creative writing tasks.
A guided discovery approach to grammar leads students to a clearer understanding of the forms and underlying concepts of English. Each unit has a 'language study' section, linked to a more detailed Grammar guide at the back of the book.
Regular business concept boxes introduce or revise key concepts in business management, such as the terms of trade and financial indexes. Quotations from business leaders provide the opportunity for additional discussion.

Important Note: The ESH Business English Program is offered in combination with the TOEIC course. Students will therefore also use the primary text for the TOEIC course - see above.

TESL

This book is a complete manual of teaching English as a foreign or second language. It is complete because of its wide-range coverage from general issues about teaching and learning English (Chapter 1 and 2) up to specific problems that English teachers frequently encounter (Chapter 13). Between these two extremes, readers can find almost everything dealing with teaching and learning English. Those who are interested in developing the teaching of language components may refer to Chapter 5. A brief review about sentence construction, part of speech, noun types, verb forms are topic within this chapter. Not intending to dichotomize weakness and strength, bad and good, these topics indicate that the description of grammar used in this book refers to the traditional view of grammar. Chapter 7 - 10 deal with teaching the four language skills. They are, therefore, appropriate for those who want a practical, easy to understand reference of teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
As a teaching manual, as the writer says in its introduction, How to teach English is a practical book concentrating on examples of teaching and teaching practice rather than on detailed analysis of learning theory. Its practical characteristic makes this book appropriate for novice teachers with even limited comprehension.
